What's happening with LED lighting

I recently attended the International Light Fair in the Philadelphia Convention Center (nice and close for me this year). This is "the" show for every manufacturer throughout the world to showcase their products, and showcase they did. Everywhere I looked were companies presenting LED (light emitting diode) products. It quickly became obvious that this super technology is here and now - poised to be used for every lighting device you can name.
LED's have come a long way since their first development in the 1960's. They were used in various indicator applications, such as automobile dashboard indicators and light switching devices. They differ from traditional light sources in the way they produce light. They are comprised of layers of semi-conducting materials coating a minute chip, which produces light when an electrical current flows through it. The specific color emitted depends on the materials used to make the diode. Light color tones or hues are measured on a Kelvin temperature scale. When a warm tone white light is desired (as we are used to seeing with incandescent lighting), the color temperature is about
2700 K (Kelvin), and is a good choice for most residential use. But if the light needs to be a bit more crisp or halogen-like, a 3000 K bulb would be more preferable.
But, is every lighting device right for LED's? LED's have some unique characteristics. First of all, they emit light hemispherically (straight out), whereas our traditional light sources - incandescent and compact fluorescent (CFL's) - emit light spherically (in all directions). Therefore, LED's are generally more efficient and waste less light. Second, they are impervious to vibration and usually do not need glass enclosures; nor do they get hot, so they won't burn your fingers either. And, traditional light sources burn out sooner when switched on and off frequently, while LED's are unaffected by rapid cycling or dimming features. They also come on at full brightness, unlike CFL's, which have a delay prior to attaining optimal light output and are not reliably dimmable.
They consistently last between 35,000 and 50,000 hours (5 years) if they are left on full time. In comparison, this is ten times longer than a halogen bulb. And if we compared it to a life of 1000 hours for a 75-watt incandescent bulb, or a CFL, which typically lasts 8,000 to 10,000 hours, we see quite a difference in bulb life. However, LED bulb life decreases in higher operating temperatures. LED's do not burn out, they decrease slowly in lighting efficiency. They are already versatile and efficient for small sources, such as under cabinet lighting, stair nosing, pathway and step lights, and where great focus is needed, such as spot lighting. They are not the right choice in all areas yet, such as large open spaces or where the light source is an object such as chandeliers.
LED's are not yet at their peak of lighting efficiency and output. They are advancing quickly however. While LED bulbs are still significantly more costly to purchase and have not perfectly transitioned into all needs, like all new technology, the prices are rapidly dropping with increased research and production. And the real cost when comparing LED bulb life spans to incandescent bulbs is favorable. LED bulbs are also mercury-free, unlike CFL's, making them a greener and safer choice for everyone.

Today is understood by modern lighting something else. It is time for a new light sources such as LED lamps can be, to move into residential areas and industrial buildings.

As we know, most of COB encapsulation technologies, including the one of Japan, are based on the encapsulation of the aluminum base, which assemble some chips to be encapsulated on the aluminum base. This is what we call the COB technology. The substrate of the aluminum is copper foil, which can only well conduct electric but it can’t process optical processing very well. MCOB technology, quite distinct from the traditional technology, puts the chips in the optical cups according to optics. It aims to make not only one cup, but many cups. It derives from a simple principle, i.e., the light of LED is from the chip itself, which means we need many angles to let out more light. The light efficiency can be improved if we have more light exits. In any cases, the light efficiency of low power’s chips can be at least 15% higher than high power’s chips. The reason is that the chips of high power are bigger and they only have four light exits. However, we can have as many as sixteen small chips on a board and 4*16 light exits. For this reason, MCOB is not only a cup, the purpose of many cups in MCOB is higher lighting efficiency. Just because of many cups, comparing with the ordinary COB tech, products adopting MCOB tech have much higher lighting efficiency.

This LED chip is processed by means of a special procedure which is called "Die Bonding". Here the individual chips are placed on the PCB and using the Wire Bonding method, connected to the contact surface of the PCB, which are described as "Pads". Gold wires in the micrometer range are used for contacting. TheCOB LED light technology allows for virtually limitless freedom of scope for the PCBs and thus serves as the basis for totally unique LED solutions.

Đèn LED được cấu tạo từ hai khối bán dẫn. Một khối chứa các điện tử điện tích âm và khối còn lại mang những lỗ trống điện tích dương. Khi chúng gặp nhau, các điện tích âm và dương kết hợp với nhau, tạo ra các electron giải phóng năng lượng dưới dạng lượng tử ánh sáng. 
Màu sắc của ánh sáng này phụ thuộc vào chất liệu được sử dụng. Gallium arsenide cho ánh sáng đỏ, trong khi gallium nitride tạo ánh sáng xanh dương. 
Đèn LED xanh dương hiện nay được sử dụng khắp mọi nơi, kể cả đèn nền trên điện thoại di động.

Giáo sư Jan Evans-Freeman, Giám đốc Trung tâm chất liệu và thiết bị điện tử thuộc Đại học Sheffield Hallam, cho biết ánh sáng trắng chúng phát ra là một thứ ánh sáng mát vì nó chứa nhiều sắc xanh dương, thật khó mà biết được liệu mọi người sẽ chấp nhận nó trong phòng khách hay không.
Các nhà khoa học đang hướng đến loại ánh sáng trắng giống ánh nắng bằng cách trộn phốtpho ở tỷ lệ thích hợp. Nếu thành công, thứ ánh sáng trắng đó sẽ trông ấm áp hơn và có ích cho những người bị bệnh rối loạn chức năng do dị ứng thời tiết. 
Đèn LED cực tím cũng có tiềm năng cách mạng hóa chất lượng nước ở các quốc gia đang phát triển. Một dạng ánh sáng cực tím năng lượng cao có thể diệt vi khuẩn và virus mà không cần đến hóa chất. Do đó, nó thường được sử dụng để tiệt trùng nước. 
Đèn cực tím thông thường khá lớn và đòi hỏi thường xuyên thay thế, trong khi LED nhỏ hơn đáng kể, rẻ hơn và có yêu cầu năng lượng thấp hơn. 
Giáo sư Oliver cho biết “Nó đặc biệt hữu ích cho những quốc gia đang phát triển vì LED có thể hoạt động bằng năng lượng mặt trời hay thậm chí là một dạng cơ chế máy móc nào đó. Nó sẽ giúp lọc nước cho người dân ở các khu vực xa xôi hẻo lánh. Tuy nhiên, chế tạo LED cực tím năng lượng cao là một thách thức công nghệ lớn. LED hiện đang được mở rộng sang lĩnh vực bảo mật máy tính qua một giải pháp gọi là mã hóa lượng tử. 
Nó liên quan đến việc gửi đi một dòng các lượng tử ánh sáng đơn lẻ từ máy tính này sang máy tính khác. 
Thông tin có thể được mã hóa trên mỗi lượng tử ánh sáng. Dựa trên những định luật cơ học lượng tử, một khi có ai đó đọc thông tin, dữ liệu trên lượng tử ánh sáng sẽ thay đổi. 
Nếu một trong các lượng tử ánh sáng trong dòng bị hacker chặn lại, thông tin sẽ bị thay đổi. 
Oliver cho biết “Người gửi sẽ được thông báo ngay lập tức khi có một người cố gắng đọc thư mật. Người gửi có thể mã hóa lại thông tin và gửi lại”. 
Mã hóa lượng tử chưa được phát triển hoàn thiện để sử dụng như công nghệ chuẩn nhưng hứa hẹn đây sẽ là biện pháp bảo vệ dữ liệu trực tuyến và ngân hàng trực tuyến cực kì hiệu quả trong tương lai. 
Mọi người sẽ có thể sử dụng công nghệ này để thực hiện giao dịch tài chính qua Internet trong 10 hay 20 năm nữa.

Đầu năm nay, châu Âu tuyên bố rằng hoạt động sản xuất các bóng đèn dây tóc sẽ bắt đầu được tiết giảm. Từ tháng 9 năm nay, toàn bộ các bóng đèn dây tóc tiêu thụ từ 100 watt điện trở lên sẽ bị cấm sử dụng. Tới năm 2012, toàn bộ các bóng đèn kiểu cũ sẽ hoàn toàn biến mất ở châu Âu.

Các động thái mạnh tay này được thực hiện để buộc người dân phải dùng các bóng đèn huỳnh quang (CFL), vốn được nhiều người biết tới với cái tên "bóng đèn tiết kiệm điện" hay "bóng đèn compact". Nhưng theo các nhà khoa học, tới năm 2012, ngay cả bóng CFL cũng sẽ được coi là lạc hậu và có thể không còn tồn tại nữa bởi sự ra đời của các bóng đèn sử dụng công nghệ diode phát quang (LED) giá rẻ.

Theo trang Daily Tech, một nhóm các nhà nghiên cứu ở Đại học Cambridge, dưới sự lãnh đạo của giáo sư Colin Humphreys, đã có một bước tiến dài trong việc chế tạo đèn LED. Cho tới nay chi phí sản xuất quá lớn của các bóng đèn LED vẫn khiến chúng nằm ngoài sự quan tâm của người tiêu dùng. Nguyên nhân do chất bán dẫn gallium nitride được dùng để tạo nên các bóng đèn LED ánh sáng trắng, vốn có giá rất đắt. Để có chất này, người ta phải sử dụng các tấm đế chip (wafer) sapphire. Tuy nhiên nhóm nghiên cứu đã tìm ra một phương thức mới để tạo ra chất này từ các đế chip silicone. Một tấm đế chip silicon hiện có giá 15 USD và có thể tạo ra 150.000 đèn LED, khiến chi phí sản xuất những chiếc đèn này càng rẻ hơn.

Mặc dù có kích thước không lớn hơn một đồng xu, hiệu quả phát sáng của các bóng đèn do nhóm nghiên cứu ở Cambrigde tạo ra lại gấp 12 lần so với bóng đèn sợi đốt và gấp 3 lần so với đèn CFL. Đèn LED được cấu tạo từ hai khối bán dẫn, một khối chứa các điện tử điện tích âm và khối còn lại mang những lỗ trống điện tích dương. Khi chúng gặp nhau, các điện tích âm và dương kết hợp với nhau, tạo ra các electron giải phóng năng lượng dưới dạng lượng tử ánh sáng. Thời gian sống của những bóng đèn này cũng lâu hơn hẳn, tới 60 năm hoặc 100.000 giờ sử dụng liên tục.

Nếu được lắp đặt trên toàn nước Anh, nhóm nghiên cứu tin rằng các bóng đèn LED sẽ cắt giảm khoản 3/4 chi phí tiền điện. Người ta đánh giá mẫu đèn mới sẽ giúp cắt giảm khoảng 40 triệu tấn khí thải CO2 do nước Anh thải ra.

T-type LEDS


T-type LED represents the conventional shape of an LED. However, its body doesn¡¯t have to be round by default. These LEDs are primarily used for signalling and for back-lit switches of electric appliances. Generally, the structure of an LED includes an LED chip, the bonding, gold or aluminium wire, and a plastic shell. 

1)Wired LEDs


The Wired LED is at present still the most well-known LEDs because this design was already used for a very long time in electronics. They were mostly used however only as control small lamps.

When the luminous efficiency of semiconductor crystals became better and better, the wired LEDs became generally accepted in the lighting industry. Several wired LED in summary, are found nowadays in LED SPOTS, LED tubes, LED modules and LED chains.

The advantage of wired LEDs exists in very favorable production in the small heat emission and that they can very simply soldered. The most usual models of wiredLEDs/strong> are 3mm, 5mm and 10mm diameter.

Chip on Board ( COB ) LED Lighting technology


The greatest power densities on the smallest space are often the basis for unique selling points of various products on the market. These criteria can be realized by the ( Chip on Board ) COB LEDs technology (Chip On Board). Direct contacting of the semiconductors (LEDs) on PCBs allows for optimal thermal management, high packaging density and thus long-lasting and high-performanceCOB LED modules.

With this technology, the LED chips are in the form of a semiconductor chip, which is neither encased nor connected. The semiconductor chip is described as a "Die". This LED chip is processed by means of a special procedure which is called "Die Bonding". Here the individual chips are placed on the PCB and using the Wire Bonding method, connected to the contact surface of the PCB, which are described as "Pads". Gold wires in the micrometer range are used for contacting. The COB LED light technology allows for virtually limitless freedom of scope for the PCBs and thus serves as the basis for totally unique LED solutions.

The Chip-on-Board LED Module

LED technology offers better color mixing and simplified thermal management for backlighting large LCD displays.

Conventionally, LED chips have been mounted on substrates to create discrete LED components, which were attached to a printed circuit board. The solder reflow process typically used to attach the component to the circuit board subjects the LED chip to a substantial amount of heat that easily can damage the chip or degrade its performance. Hence, tight (and, therefore, expensive) process control is required for this type of assembly. In fact, the substrate cost is almost invariably the second-highest in an LED component, exceeded only by the cost of the chip itself.

A different approach, called chip-on-board packaging, seems capable of meeting all the requirements of backlighting. This method mounts the LED chip directly onto the printed circuit board using a conductive adhesive, which helps reduce costs by eliminating the substrate and complicated solder reflow assembly process. In addition, direct attachment can reduce the pitch between LED chips from the conventional 5 mm to approximately 2 mm and can lower the overall height of the light source (Figure 1).

Decreasing the LED pitch reduces the color-mixing area required (Figure 2), which means that the area of light loss is smaller. To achieve high coupling efficiency from the light source to the lightguide plate, a reflector is incorporated into the chip-on-board package to produce an oval radiation pattern. A narrow radiation pattern on the X-axis allows more light to enter the lightguide plate, whereas a wider radiation angle on the Y-axis enhances color mixing.

Simple thermal management

A metal core printed circuit board is used in the package to provide a low thermal resistance, allowing heat generated by the LED chip to be transferred to the heat sink via the shortest possible thermal path (Figure 3), which increases the life span; moveover, the heat transfers more efficiently through three layers than through five. The chip-on-board packages are mounted directly onto the back metal (with thermal compound at the interface), so that the heat generated by the LED chips spreads efficiently on the large metal frame for efficient dissipation without additional heat sinking. In the demonstration configuration, the entire backlight unit can maintain a temperature below 60°.

When compared with assemblies using conventional discrete LED packages, a chip-on-board approach can be compared with RGB LED-based LCD backlighting. The chip-on-board leds packaging has a thin outline, it produces better color mixing, and it requires simple thermal management and potentially lowers costs, all of which better match the requirements of customers. In addition, assembling a complete backlight using the chip-on-board led package is similar to that using today fluorescent lamps, which makes a changeover relatively simple.


The reflector tub in that semiconductor crystal is embedded, is also the short leg of a wired LED and also the MINUS -(cathode). A further distinguishing feature for the Minusseite of a Bedrahteten LED is an easy flattening of the plastic shroud on this side.

Wired LEDs are produced in all colors also in RGB (REDGREENBLUE). Either with automatic color change or automatic dialable. The automatic dialcash possess 4 legs (pin).

Conceptual structure of a wired LED


The basis is made from a metallic lead frame with a specially treated surface. In order to achieve a directional light distribution of high efficacy, LED chips are mounted on a stamped reflector (cathode) using a conductive adhesive. The anode is contacted by a gold wire. The light distribution characteristics of an LED are determined by the geometry of the reflector, the shape of the plastic shell and the positioning of the chip inside the shell. 

Superflux LEDs ( Spider LEDs )


One could see superflux LED (or Spider LED called) as advancement of the wired LED.

They possess a large reflected beam angle and send their light laminar and are therefore better suitable for surface lighting. The four contact contacts (pin) do not only make a better heat dissipation and thus a high life span possible, but they can be headed also separately. Spider LEDcontains up to 4 semiconductor crystals (chips).

These advantages make those for superflux LED a perfect multi-chip carrier with infinitely many ranges of application.

Superflux are used in LED bulbs, LED tubes, LED modules and ever more frequently in addition, in the autolighting industry

Here we know them as Soffitten in many different sizes and colors. In the advertising industry they are used e.g. for signature lighting or dia. assemblies.

Superflux LEDs are used for turn signals, stop light or daily headlight. SMD LEDs are produced in all colors also in RGB (RED,GREENBLUE).
